About Cal Poly Pomona
California State Polytechnic University Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona/CPP) is a public university located approximately 30 miles east of LACC at the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. As a polytechnic university, Cal Poly Pomona focuses on applied and experiential learning to combine theory with practical skills training. Cal Poly Pomona was the highest-ranking polytechnic university and the 17th ranked institution in the nation overall on the 2022 CollegeNET Social Mobility Index, indicating its success at enabling students from low-income households to enter well-paying careers.
Cal Poly Pomona’s Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology (BS FST) degree program is one of only four undergraduate food science programs in California approved by the Institute of Food Technologists’ Higher Education Review Board. CPP established the FST major in 1999 in response to increasing demand from the rapidly growing Southern California food industry for food scientists and technologists. Food and beverage processing is the third largest manufacturing sector in California.
Summer Transfer Program / Academy
Cal Poly Pomona will implement a two-week summer bootcamp to immerse a cohort of 20 undergraduate students per year in the field of food science and technology. The Academy will touch on all components of FST education, including food chemistry, food microbiology, sensory evaluation, food engineering, food processing and preservation, food law and regulations, and nutrition.
The Academy will introduce students to the Cal Poly Pomona campus, BS FST program, faculty, and laboratories. Students will participate in hands-on, experiential learning activities such as lab demonstrations, a field trip to a food manufacturing facility, and FST graduate student and faculty shadowing under specific research projects.
CPP Scholarship
Cal Poly Pomona will assist with curriculum development and transfer articulation, lead the Food Science & Technology Academy, provide scholarships for BS and MS FST students (including eligible transfer students from LACC). CPP will provide $3,000 scholarships to 10 BS or MS FST students each year, for a total of 40 students (including a minimum of 10 MS students) during the grant period.
Graduate School – All about it
The goal of this Program is to ensure students enter the Food, Science and Technology pathway, they stay on the pathway for the duration of the Program at City, and receive the educational, counseling, experiential and transfer support they need to successfully transfer to Cal Poly Pomona.
